Coming back to an empty home,
No friendly cat or garden gnome,
No happy dog or loving spouse;
Just me and a lonely, empty house.
I heaved a sigh in the empty hall
And gazed at every empty wall,
The empty floors, the empty bed,
An empty heart and an empty head.
I'll find no pleasure or comfort there,
With the rooms unfurnished and cupboards bare,
A big empty nothing and nothing more;
I knew Id forgotten to lock the door.

Always assume the worst: if it happens you'll be prepared and if it doesn't the surprise will be pleasant.
I think you should write like this more often...

The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it.

'Kill!' shouted Ford. He shouted it at his towel.
The towel leapt up out of Harl's hands.
This was not because it had any motive force of its own, but because Harl was so startled at the idea that it might.
